Residential Care Staff - Fire Awareness Training

In an effort to relieve the repetitive nature of Fire Awareness training to Care Home staff, 'Millbrook' have developed a rolling programme of training sessions. Each session reinforces general fire awareness in the workplace and contains either specific learning points or involves a practical 'Hands on' session for staff.

The courses currently provided by 'Millbrook' for Residential and Nursing Care establishment staff are:

1. General Fire Awareness Input and Smoke Evacuation Exercise

This course covers the following areas: Evacuation strategies for the home and knowledge of the fire safety features within it. What to do if the alarm operates. What to do if discovering a fire etc. The importance of fire doors and compartmentation. Hazard spotting etc. A practical exercise also takes place, involving all staff, in which a fire situation is simulated using cosmetic smoke. Staff are nominated to act as night staff, residents and observers and given the opportunity to put the evacuation strategy theory into practice, in a controlled, safe environment.

2. General Fire Awareness.

Duration - 1 hr.

This course covers all of the core areas and uses DVD presentation to reinforce learning points.

3. General Fire Awareness and Fire Extinguisher Training

Duration - 1รป hrs

The focus of this course is the theory and use of fire fighting equipment, however, the core areas are re-emphasised during the input. A practical 'hands-on' session takes place, utilising 'Fire Training Rigs', which gives staff the opportunity to extinguish small fires, under controlled conditions, with extinguishers which are provided by Millbrook.
4. General Fire Awareness Quiz, Evacuation Plan Exercise, Electrical Safety

Duration - 1 hr
On this course staff undertake a quiz based on the input received over the previous sessions. Each of the answers is discussed, thus reinforcing the main fire safety points. Staff then participate in a plan evacuation exercise and finally knowledge of electrical safety is tested. During this session staff are placed into teams in order to alleviate 'feelings of pressure' on individuals.

5. Case Study and Human Behaviour in a Fire

Duration - 1 hr
The main focus of this session is a case study. An analysis is completed of a fire in a care home in which residents, tragically, lost their lives. The study is used to reinforce the correct actions that staff should take in the event of a fire. Human behaviour in a fire is also discussed and again the core areas are re-emphasised.

Training frequency

The above courses are intended as a rolling programme i.e. session (1) delivered to staff, followed by session (2) six months later and then session (3) etc. However, clients may choose any of the sessions to be delivered to suit their specific training needs.

The rolling programme has been designed to enable a new starter to attend any of the sessions and ensure that they receive instruction in the relevant areas of fire safety, which will ensure compliance with guidelines etc.
